Description

This 3 page letter is in nice condition. There is no damage to it although it shows some soilage on the outside envelope. That is the original postage stamp. It you will notice it was sealed with wax. This letter has no envelope because they folded it in a certain way that it could be addressed and posted. This letter to William Gray is from his nephew James A. Gray. He talks about The Bank of Virginia check on The Bank of America for $210.00. It is for 3 of the very best Sheffield waiters, one canter and 2 Goblets of fine silver. He also enclosed a bill for $237.81 for the items. Also included is a bill of lading for the box containing the items and will be shipped on the Steamer Jamestown from New York to Richmond and should arrive on Monday morning. He explains about the quality silver items.  He also talks about the Bank Of The Republic. He talks about other things also. It is dated Dec 24th in the inside and Dec 22 on the outside. I wonder if some of these silver items still exist. Gray, William, 1793-1873. Papers, 1819-1875. ca. 4,000 items. William Gray (1793-1873) was a prominent tobacco shipper and manufacturer associated with several firms in Manchester, Va. Born in Prince Edward County, Gray moved to Manchester (part of Chesterfield County incorporated into the City of Richmond in 1910), around 1810. In 1821, Gray became a partner in Gray & Pankey and, twelve years later, established his own firm, William Gray & Co. He directed the company’s operations until his death in 1873.
