Fantastic check from 1924 that has done more traveling than most people. Check was written in Union City PA on the First National Bank of Union City, a correspondent of The Hanover Bank of New York City on Nov 10(?), 1924 to a Tbekla Hoffman who endorsed it and deposited it in an agency bank of the Chartered Bank of India. It was again back endorsed and went to India for clearing thru the Imperial Bank of India, who back endorsed it again and sent it back to the Chartered Bank of India who endorsed it again on the back. Somewhere it passed thru the state of Madras where it was franked with a 1 anna Indian revenue stamp (and I assume the collectable amount of the check was curtailed by 1 anna) by another bank whose name shall remain undeciperable. Finally, after 75 days (on Feb 20, 1925) the check was finaly received and endorsed again on the back at the New York Clearing House of the Bank of New York and Trust Co. It was probably cleared back to the The National Bank of Union City, and I assume that the Hoffman bank account was credited for the amount of the check ($225 minus 1 anna tax in Madras). Isn't this fascinating? Checks tell us so much; that is why I love them. I am having fun describing this check, which has five endorsements on the back, plus the Indian stamp, three endorsements on the front plus a paid perfin boldly on the front. BTW, since none fo the endorsements were dated, I could have all of this backwards. All of the above is only a best guess, but it was fun. Maybe you will have a different interpretation of all the endorsements and come up with a different trip. thanks :)
