ABSTRACT GUERNSEY Guernsey’s coastline has been photographed countless times over the years, with amateurs and professionals keen to capture its breathtaking beauty. Many have done so, but few have captured the scenes with the sort of ethereal quality achieved by local photographers Nick Després and Alex Wallace of perfectprints.co.uk. The images featured on the stamps are all fabulous pieces of art in their own right, so striking that it is tempting to think they have been digitally enhanced. However, they are simply the result of great skill, diligent research, superb subjects and just a tiny bit of luck in terms of Mother Nature’s performance on the day. The milky effect that gives the Pleinmont Point stamp its surreal look was obtained by nothing more than a long exposure, the kind of thing that any of us with a decent SLR camera could arrange if we had the knowledge to think of it and the skill carry it out. But we don’t, and we can only admire the brilliance of those with the flair and technique to pull it off. It is a similar story with Rocks at Albecq, in which the sea’s movement is recorded slowly, creating a misty, swirling impression of what is really volatile, free-flowing water that probably splashed salt all over the photographer and his equipment as he waited patiently for the ideal moment. Still on the west coast of the island, right next to Albecq, Groynes at Vazon is a mesmerising portrait of a calm sea at what is, in fact, a beach more often home to thundering waves. The groynes are wooden posts embedded in the sand to break up the surges before they hit the sea wall. Nowadays Vazon is the headquarters of Guernsey’s enthusiastic band of surfers, for whom the bigger and more powerful the waves are, the better. A naturally more tranquil place is Saints Harbour, this peaceful view of which conveys the simplicity of life (in theory, at least) for the fisherman who keeps his boat in this sheltered haven. Saints also boasts a beautiful, atmospheric little beach that resembles – and indeed once was - a smugglers’ cove. La Bette is a little-known, barely accessible bay at the foot of the southern cliffs, while Bordeaux harbour is a charmingly unsophisticated area over on the northwest coast. Sunrises and sunsets provide wonderful, natural tints for this and the remaining four stamps, which contrast superbly with the icy blues of the first five. The reservoir at St Saviour’s is Guernsey’s only large expanse of fresh water, with a walkway seen here in the distance as the photographer crouched in a far less convenient spot on the western bank to capture the reflections of trees and a small building on the other side. Vazon Bay appears again, this time at low tide, with the sunset lending its hues to the wet sand, while dawn breaks on the east coast on the St Peter Port Lighthouse stamp. This was taken from the inland part of the Castle Breakwater (Castle Cornet is behind and to the photographer’s right), while a magnifying glass will show a couple of anglers trying their luck at the far end, with the island of Sark and a visiting cruise ship in the distance. Lastly, sunset and clouds combine to show off the splendour of Petit Port at low tide.
